A grade compares a skater with everyone who played that night, adjusted for how he was used — heavier minutes and defensive-zone starts raise the bar. Goaltenders are graded against expectation instead, on goals saved above expected. How this is calculated
Every player gets a rating out of 100 — his percentile among NHL players at the same position. A defenseman is ranked against defencemen, not against forwards. 90+ is elite; 75+ belongs at the top of a roster; 40-60 is an everyday NHLer.
Underneath every rating is wins above replacement, which counts how many wins a player adds compared with someone freely available to any team. Games get a letter grade on the same idea, comparing each skater with everyone who was on the ice that night. Lines and pairs are graded on what units built the same way have done since 2010-11.
