Use it, and say where it came from

If you write about the Sabres, broadcast about them or make a podcast about them, the tools are yours free. The only ask is a credit.

Free access for media

Line chemistry, player comps, the lineup builder and the full sixteen-season archive, at no cost, for anyone covering this team. Independent writers and podcasters count — this is not restricted to outlets with a masthead.

Ratings, game grades and every article are already free to everyone, with or without this.

How to cite it

Credit as WARpath Buffalo, with a link to warpathbuffalo.comwhere the format allows. On air, “WARpath Buffalo” on its own is fine.

The more useful request: describe the numbers accurately. These are the three that get mangled most.

  • Thompson has a WAR rating of 91.

Thompson rates 91st percentile among NHL forwards, worth 2.16 wins above replacement.

The rating and the WAR are two different numbers. 91 is a percentile; 2.16 is the wins.

  • WARpath projects the Krebs line to outscore opponents.

WARpath grades that line's structure in the 62nd percentile — lines built that way have outscored opponents slightly more often than not.

Chemistry is a description of how a combination is built and what similar ones have done. It is not a forecast of a specific line.

  • The model says Byram is a bad defenseman.

Byram's isolated defensive rating is 38th percentile, though his minutes are among the hardest on the roster.

A single component is not a verdict on a player, and the deployment context is usually the interesting half.

Boilerplate

WARpath Buffalo is a free Buffalo Sabres analytics site built by Jason Moser, a former Sabres beat reporter. It rates every player, grades every game and publishes its full methodology, using a wins-above-replacement model built from sixteen seasons of NHL play-by-play data.

Fuller detail, including what the model gets wrong, is on the methodology page. Term definitions are in the glossary.

Interviews and data requests

Happy to explain a number on the record, or to pull something the site does not show — a specific line's history, a player's component splits across seasons, a comparison the tools will not build.
