Goalie Lab · 2015-16

How hard is his job, and how well does he do it?

Save percentage blames the goalie for everything in front of him. The environment score measures the job instead, from how much danger came at him and how hard the shots were. Goals saved above expected measures what he did with it.

The environment score measures how clean a goalie's job was: 100 is the easiest in the league, 0 the hardest. It ranks six things against every NHL goalie with at least a quarter of the league leader's minutes: expected goals against per 60 (35%), expected goals per shot (25%), shots per 60 (15%), the share of shots from high danger (10%), the share off the rush or a rebound (10%) and the share of danger faced on the penalty kill (5%). 80 and up is sheltered, under 20 is under siege. Areas of the ice follow NHL Edge's danger bands. How expected goals work
